"Seating Arrangements" by Maggie Shipstead

'Seating Arrangements' by Maggie Shipstead

Maggie Shipstead's award-winning debut novel deftly chronicles one weekend in the lives of an upper-crust New England family. Winn Van Meter and his wife, Biddy, are preparing to give their daughter away in marriage, but their well-organized lives are tipped off-kilter by misbehaving family, neighbors and wedding party members. It's nothing major, but just enough to make everyone question what they think they know about their lives, their society, their upbringing and their sense of self. Each character in Shipstead's ensemble is well crafted and the setting is so well described, you can almost smell the sea air of a New England ocean island.
