This event has passed. View upcoming events. SPENCER - Gary Hess will present a program on the Frank J. Hess and Sons Cooperage at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 4 at the Marathon County Public Library Spencer Branch, 105 Park St., Spencer. Hess will speak about his grandfather, Frank J. Hess, who opened a cooperage in Madison in 1904 and manufactured white oak beer kegs for breweries. The factory was on Schenk's corners for more than 62 years and was the state's largest independent cooperage. Hess also will display white oak barrels, parts of barrels and cooper tools. Hess said he does the presentations to honor his grandfather and his four sons. The program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. For more information, call 715-659-3996.
