Bartleby.com — An online, searchable collection of classic literature, poetry, and reference works. Free for online viewing only. Downloads of complete works are not possible.

Internet Archive: Ebook & Texts — Download free books and texts. Contains a wide range of fiction, popular books, children's books, historical texts and academic books.

Open Library — Over 1 million free-to-keep classic ebooks in multiple formats, plus a free ebook lending library offered in partnership with public libraries world-wide. This site also collects bibliographic information, with the goal of creating "one page for every book ever published."

Project Gutenberg — Over 36,000 free ebooks that may be downloaded to your computer, e-reader, or other portable devices. Choose between ePub, Kindle, HTML and simple text formats. These are "public domain" books no longer protected by copyright, and are generally older works.
