Handbell choir spreads holiday cheer at our Spencer Branch!

A photo of the Spencer High School Handbell Choir performing, Dec. 2018

December 6, 2018

It’s the holidays once again, and that means an annual visit from the Spencer High School Handbell Choir! This talented group of teens visited our Spencer Branch on the morning of December 4 to spread holiday cheer to a large group of community members who attended. The choir performed for nearly an hour, and performed a wide variety of holiday music, free of charge. A visit from the handbell choir has become an annual tradition, with the group visiting the Spencer Branch every December for the last few years. If you missed the concert, you can get a feel for what it was like by watching the video below, in which the group performs “We Three Kings,” for a delighted audience!

Love in Six Words Contest Entries

February 14, 2018

Today is Valentine's Day, and love is in the air!  Over the past few weeks, we've been asking adults at our nine library locations and online to tell us what love means to them in six words or less. Folks were limited to a total of three entries per person and could write about any kind of love - love for a friend or family member, significant other, pet, hobby, song, food, inanimate object, etc. We received 16 entries in total, and originally planned on picking our favorites but...we couldn't! We liked all of your entries so much that you're all winners in our book. Read the submitted entries below and put a little love in your heart!   Attentive devoted loving care given faithfully! –...

MCPL to Close for MLK Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr.

January 2, 2018

All Marathon County Public Library locations will be closed on Monday, January 15, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. But this MLK Day won’t be a day off for library staff and other county employees. Instead, the county has organized a “day on” where county offices and agencies will be closed so that its employees can attend a number of educational programs based around the ideals promoted by Dr. King. The programs will revolve around Dr. King’s teachings of diversity, non-violence and poverty. Planned speakers for the day include Stan Davis, owner of the Davis Group of Wisconsin and former Chief of Staff to former Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle; as well as county employees with specialized...

MCPL Spencer Branch Filled with Sounds of the Season

December 6, 2017

It's December, the rain has turned to snow and the holiday season is in full-swing! Our Spencer Branch got residents of all ages into the holiday spirit yesterday with a visit from the popular Spencer High School Handbell Ensemble. This group (who last year helped set the Guinness World Record for the largest handbell ensemble), performed a variety of holiday music for a packed audience of attendees. In case you weren't able to attend this event, we've included a sample of two of their performances below - "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Welcome Christmas" from Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And be warned - these tunes will put you in a holly, jolly mood!   Spencer High School...

Local Organizations to Offer Free Thanksgiving Meals

November 21, 2017

Thanksgiving is just two days away, with many people gathering their ingredients, digging out their family recipes and planning their trips home.  But some community members aren't fortunate enough to have the financial resources for a Thanksgiving meal, or to have a place to spend the holiday. Luckily, there are handful of generous organizations and establishments that will offer free Thanksgiving meals during certain hours on November 22 and 23. The organizations and businesses offering these meals are spread across Wausau and its surrounding communities, making them easy to access no matter which part of the city you reside in.   Blue Willow Cafe  Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.,...

Holiday Hits at our Spencer Branch!

December 7, 2016

On December 6, the award-winning Spencer High School Handbell Choir performed an hour-long concert of holiday music for folks at our Spencer Branch Library. The concert was attended by more than 30 individuals from the Spencer area and included a mixture of traditional holiday songs! The handbell choir also recently competed in a record-breaking performance at the Mall of America on November 19, which broke the Guinness World Record for the largest handbell choir performance with over 650 people participating. Celebrate the Holidays with MCPL!

November 28, 2015

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Marathon County Public Library, with 10 holiday-themed events scheduled between now and December 21 at the Wausau Headquarters and its eight branches. Running now through December 14, MCPL is kicking off the holiday season with “Letters to Santa,” during which time children of any age can visit the Wausau headquarters to drop off a letter in Santa’s gingerbread house mailbox, located in the Children’s Department. After the library staff sends the letters up to the North Pole, children will receive a reply in the mail from Santa Claus himself starting the week of December 14. The holiday fun in Wausau continues with two craft events held back-to-back. “...
