June 16, 2017
The kids are out of school, the temperatures are rising and summer is finally upon us!
June, July and August are always busy months here at the Marathon County Public Library (and just about everywhere else), with a full calendar of events and activities to attend throughout the summer. We have plenty on our plate with our annual Summer Library Program offerings, with many of our events corresponding with other events and holidays happening across Marathon County.
While it’s far from a complete guide, take a look at some of the crossover events we have planned for the coming months in relation to other popular events happening this summer in your community!
Celebrate the USA Story Time
Tue., 6/27/17, 10:30am - 11:30am @ MCPL Hatley
Thu., 7/6/17, 10:30am - 11:30am @ MCPL Marathon City
During this patriotic story time happening at our Hatley and Marathon City Branches, we'll celebrate our nation's birthday with a story time comprised of patriotic stories, songs and themed crafts, with all supplies provided.
The story time coincides perfectly with the 4TH of July, of course, and there is no shortage of events happening to celebrate America, including the Wausau Area Fourth of July Festival happening June 30-July 4 at Marathon Park, the Fourth of July Festival and Parade happening on July 4 in Mosinee, and the Wisconsin Woodchucks’ Red, White and Boom event.
MCPL Movie Night: "The Finest Hours"
Thu., 7/6/17, 6pm - 8pm @ MCPL Wausau
MCPL will offer a free screening of this 2016 live-action historical film based on the 2010 book detailing a real-life U.S. Coast Guard rescue attempt.
The book and film both tell the story of the rescue attempt in 1952 by a Coast Guard team to save crew from an oil tanker that split in half off the coast of Cape Cod. The film, rated PG-13, stars Chris Pine and Casey Affleck, among others.
This film screening is held in conjunction with an event happening the following where Michael J. Tougias (one of the book’s authors) and Matt Manske (whose father was one of the Coast Guard crew members on the mission) will speak at an event in Wausau. Details on the event are still TBD.
Adventures with Chalk and Hot Air Balloons
Sat., 7/8/17, 10:30am - 12pm @ MCPL Wausau
A week ahead of Wausau Events’ Balloon Rally and Chalkfest on the weekend of July 14, 15 and 16, we’ll help families get in the spirit by putting together a special story time featuring stories about hot air balloons and chalk art, followed by activities related to hot air balloon science and hands-on art projects using chalk!
Sat., 7/15/17, 11am - 3pm @ Monk Botanical Gardens
Sun., 7/16/17, 11am - 3pm @ Monk Botanical Gardens
MCPL and the Monk Botanical Gardens is partnered up again to bring you the second annual StoryWalk® Weekend! During this fun-filled family weekend, kids and families can get outdoors to stroll around one of Wausau’s hidden gems while reading eight different children's books related to nature, gardening, and animals! There will be supplemental activities and crafts at the end of each book trail, including crafts, soup-making, making and planting flower pots, and more!
In addition to the book trails, hands-on craft-making and other activities for children will be offered by the Woodson Art Museum, The Grand Theater and the Marathon County Historical Society! Food and drinks will also be available for purchase, and attendees will have the chance to win free copies of each StoryWalk book!
The Best part? Admission is free and open to the public!

Wausau resident Katelyn Schmoll was chosen to represent the Wisconsin Valley Fair by its board of directors. As an active member of 4-H who has raised and shown a variety of animals, Schmoll will read farm and fair-related stories, talk about her role as Fairest of the Fair and get kids excited about agriculture!
Wisconsin Woodchucks: Summer Readers Game Night
Sat., 8/12/17, 6:35pm - 8:30pm @ Athletic Park
Kids and families can help us wrap up our 2017 Summer Reading program by attending a night out at the ballpark!
In partnership with the Wisconsin Woodchucks baseball team in Wausau, children and teens who meet their goals during our Summer Reading Program will receive one voucher to attend this Aug. 12 Woodchucks baseball game for free! (Please note the voucher is good for the reader only, not the whole family.) Others can attend the game by paying the admission price as well. So why not say goodbye to summer spending an evening with the family rooting on Wausau’s own collegiate summer baseball team?
