book covers of some of this year's staff picks

December 31, 2019

With only a few hours remaining in 2019, another year is about to come to a close. Before we are thrust into a new year and a new decade, staff members at the Marathon County Public Library (MCPL) are taking a look back on the books they read over the past 12 months and selecting their favorites. This year’s list features 26 books that MCPL employees say were their favorite of the year (along with a few runners-up). This diverse list includes adult fiction and nonfiction, youth nonfiction, best-sellers, and titles by both well-known and up-and-coming authors. In addition to our own picks, we’d also like to know – what was your favorite book that you read this year? Let us know in the comments. Of...

December 19, 2019

With the holiday season upon us, I would like to share some exciting news for our library users around the county. You may have noticed that we are currently on hold with our interior upgrades, and there is now a plan for the county’s facilities team to complete the roof repairs in the spring. The repairs were attempted last year, but unanticipated structural issues prevented the completion of those repairs. Currently, Marathon County is looking at renewing the project in the spring, after which the interior enhancements will proceed. Also, I am pleased to report that the library’s board has formed a task force to review MCPL’s library system membership. Currently, we are members of the Wisconsin Valley...

November 21, 2019

In an effort to provide more consistency and uniformity across its 9 locations, the Marathon County Public Library will change its hours of operation starting January 12, 2020, to include a balance of morning, afternoon and evening hours. The library’s Board of Trustees in October 2019 unanimously approved the changes, which were based on factors such as hourly circulation and door counts, staffing and safety issues, public and staff surveys, and comparisons with other libraries in Wisconsin and elsewhere in the United States. See below for a full breakdown of the hours by location, but here are a few key things to keep in mind if you’re wondering about your next trip to the library after...

November 6, 2019

Dinosaurs have taken over the Early Literacy Center (ELC) at MCPL Wausau! Follow the T-Rex footprints in the children's area and begin to explore the magnet wall, flannel board, volcano, activity play mat, puppet stand, and more. Pretending to play is an important part of your child’s development. Let your child’s imagination run wild as they explore the dinosaur world play mat with the realistic dinosaur action figures. Your child can also put on a show with dino puppets and create their own story from beginning to end! Imagine how the world looked back when dinosaurs roamed the earth by arranging the dinosaurs within the volcanic scene on the felt board! Playing with felt characters builds hands-on learning...

October 29, 2019

One of the Marathon County Public Library’s main goals is to give the best service possible to our patrons. To help better serve you, the hours of operation at each MCPL location will change starting in mid-January. A balance of morning, afternoon and evening hours will be offered at each of our nine locations. In addition, Saturday hours will be offered at each location in order to provide patrons with weekend access to their local library in every part of the county! Take note of the new service hours listed below, which will go into effect starting January 12, 2020. A few recurring events, such as story times and book clubs, will be affected by the change in hours and will meet at new...
