Staff Review: "Allergic" by Megan Wagner Lloyd, Michelle Mee Nutter

Allergic is a sweet, funny story about friendship and pets.

Maggie has always wanted a pet and her parents have agreed that she can have a puppy, even with their fourth child on the way. But imagine Maggie’s disappointment when she finds out that she is severely allergic to anything with fur or feathers! She bravely tries out a fish, reptiles, and hermit crabs, but nothing seems to click. At her new school they even have to give up their classroom guinea pig, which Maggie feels everyone blames on her. The one good thing in her life is her new neighbor and best friend, Claire. Then Claire gets a dog! Small misunderstandings can’t keep the friends apart, however, and they find a solution that works for everyone.

I appreciate how this story illustrates real life disappointments. Sometimes your plans and dreams change. “How could something that made me so happy make me so sick?” thinks Maggie. She experiences sadness and pain at the loss of her dream to be a veterinarian, but then she channels her energy into a new interest in marine biology. The book’s hopeful ending makes it a satisfying story.
