The Bees

Cover: 'The Bees'

Staff Review: "The Bees" by Laline Paull

When I first picked up this book, I was intrigued by the idea of a book that had honeybees as the characters. I wondered if it was possible to make this work. What I discovered was not only does this work, but the book was so captivating that I couldn't put it down! We are drawn into the life of the hive as Flora 717 emerges from her cell in the Arrivals Hall. The newly hatched bee quickly discovers that a strong and organized hive is made of a class system with strong sets of rules and one does not easily change her destiny. Despite being born a sanitation worker, the lowest of the low in hive standards, Flora is brave, strong, and unusual. She faces danger, adventure, persecution, and finally comes face to face with her destiny. Through bravery and kindness she raises esteem for herself and her kin. This book is a must read for a fresh perspective and a new appreciation for the world around us.
