Staff Review: "Later" by Stephen King

The son of a struggling single mother, Jamie Conklin just wants an ordinary childhood. But Jamie is no ordinary child. Born with an unnatural ability his mom urges him to keep secret, Jamie can see what no one else can see and learn what no one else can learn. But the cost of using this ability is higher than Jamie can imagine—as he discovers when an NYPD detective draws him into the pursuit of a killer who has threatened to strike from beyond the grave.

In true Stephen King fashion, I found this book to be full of ups and downs. One minute I loved the plot twists, but the next I wasn't happy with the cheesiness that King sometimes spreads on too thick to be believable. Overall I would say it's a good read. I love the horror, suspense and supernatural all rolled into one. There is some gore (and, of course, some violence), but Jamie is a warm character that only wants to help others. He forms relationships with a number of different people throughout the story but always follows his heart and makes the best choices to protect those he cares about. He grows up facing his demons, whether real or metaphorical….as we all do.

Audience: adults | Genre: adult fiction, fiction, suspense
