Roxie and the Hooligans at Buzzard's Roost

Staff Review: Roxie and the Hooligans at Buzzard's Roost

★★★★

Nine-year–old Roxie loves her quirky, Uncle Dangerfoot,  so when he arrives from London and she discovers that she is going to go on vacation with him,  and her BFF Norman can come along, she is ecstatic. However, when they arrive at their destination, Windswept House near the ocean, they discover that the Hooligans—Helvetica, Simon, Freddy and Smoky Jo stowed away in the trailer and plan to stay.  But the children soon discover that all does not seem to be as it appears (or as they are told) at Windswept House. They are forbidden to go to the top floor or roof, where an odd-looking widow and a non-crying baby supposedly live, and Uncle Dangerfoot is acting quite secretive.  When the children suddenly begin hearing strange noises coming from the roof, of course they can't resist investigating. This second book in the “Roxie and the Hooligans” series by Newbery Medal-winning author Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a very enjoyable story for beginning mystery readers.
