The Upside of Unrequited

Staff Review: The Upside of Unrequited

"The Upside of Unrequited" by Becky Albertalli

Cover: 'The Upside of Unrequited'

★★★

Molly and Cassie are 17 year-old fraternal twins who have always been extremely close. But ever since Cassie started dating her girlfriend, Mina, the two sisters have started drifting apart. Molly feels like she’s being left behind and longs for a boyfriend to share her life with and spend time with.

The thing is, Molly has had 25 crushes so far in her life and, each time, her romantic feelings were not returned. Molly wants to protect her heart and has really given up on the idea of a relationship. But unexpectedly, Molly develops a crush on two new guys in her life, both of whom might actually be attracted to her. There’s Will, a cool, popular hipster who is best friends with Mina; and Reid, Molly’s awkward, somewhat geeky co-worker. Molly must wade through her feelings and figure out who she likes more.

Author Becky Albertalli is also the author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, a book I really adored. This book is not as cute, quirky or entertaining as Simon, but still has its charms. A few characters from Simon also pop up at various points of this book, which is a fun addition. All in all, this book didn’t knock me off my feet but it made for a quick, light read.
