Staff Review: As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride
Fans of the movie The Princess Bride—this book is for you! Cary Elwes, whom fans of the movie know as Westley, shares memories and behind-the-scenes stories from the making of a movie that eventually became a classic. Many alumni of the movie, including Rob Reiner and the surviving members of the central cast, contribute anecdotes, and it is abundantly clear that they are thrilled to have an excuse to reflect upon this experience. (Well, maybe everyone but Wallace Shawn—it turns out that he was absolutely terrified by the unfounded fear that he would be fired and an actual fear of heights.) Elwes may have starred in the movie, but it is clear that he is a huge fan of the movie and still can’t quite believe he got to part of it all. I listened to the audiobook, which was a delight! It is narrated by Elwes, who is a skilled mimic, and many of his Bride colleagues read the anecdotes they contributed. A note of caution—you may feel in irresistible urge to re-watch the movie or read the William Goldman book that inspired it all! Have fun storming the castle!
