SUMMARY:Edgar: Book Club: “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our March book club to discuss “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi. \nTwo half-sisters\, Effia and Esi\, are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia\, her sister\, Esi\, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons\, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade\, and shipped off to America\, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana\, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children into America. From the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration\, from the coal mines of Pratt City\, Alabama\, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem\, right up through the present day\, Homegoing makes history visceral\, and captures\, with singular and stunning immediacy\, how the memory of captivity came to be inscribed in the soul of a nation. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library to pick up a copy of the book to check out. For more information\, please contact us at 715-352-3155.

SUMMARY:Hatley: Book Club: “The School for Good Mothers” by Jessamine Chan
DESCRIPTION:Join us and other book lovers for a discussion of “The School for Good Mothers” by Jessamine Chan. \nFrida Liu is struggling. She doesn’t have a career worthy of her Chinese immigrant parents’ sacrifices. What’s worse is she can’t persuade her husband\, Gust\, to give up his wellness-obsessed younger mistress. Only with their angelic daughter Harriet does Frida finally feel she’s attained the perfection expected of her. Until Frida has a horrible day. The state has its eyes on mothers like Frida—ones who check their phones while their kids are on the playground; who let their children walk home alone; in other words\, mothers who only have one lapse of judgement. Now\, a host of government officials will determine if Frida is a candidate for a Big Brother-like institution that measures the success or failure of a mother’s devotion. Faced with the possibility of losing Harriet\, Frida must prove that she can live up to the standards set for mothers—that she can learn to be good. \nEveryone is welcome to join the discussion. No registration is required. Stop by the library for a copy of the book to check out! Contact us at 715-446-3537 for more information.

SUMMARY:Athens: Book Club: “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for our March book club to discuss “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver. \nDellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she became pregnant at seventeen. Now\, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm\, she has settled for permanent disappointment but seeks momentary escape through an obsessive flirtation with a younger man. As she hikes up a mountain road behind her house to a secret tryst\, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent\, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle\, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists\, religious leaders\, and the media. The bewildering emergency draws rural farmers into unexpected acquaintance with urbane journalists\, opportunists\, sightseers\, and a striking biologist with his own stake in the outcome. As the community lines up to judge the woman and her miracle\, Dellarobia confronts her family\, her church\, her town\, and a larger world\, in a flight toward truth that could undo all she has ever believed. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library for a copy of the book to check out. For more information\, please contact us at 715-257-7292.
