LENA Start

Adults Registration

The first three years of a child's life are vital to brain development and exposure to talk is one of the most important factors. The LENA Start system measures the early language environment of children ages birth to 32 months. A LENA "talk pedometer" measures the number of words spoken to children, providing families with valuable data that they can then use to improve their verbal interactions with their child.

The next round of LENA Start sessions run for 10 weeks at MCPL's Wausau Headquarters on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday evenings. Each week, parents and caregivers will receive a printed report and learn helpful talking tips to improve the quality and quantity of talk with the child.

Sessions are free, but registration is required (see below). Free childcare will be provided for all LENA Start families. A free book for your child will be given at each session attended. All LENA Start materials are included and a snack or meal is provided free of charge. In addition, there will be special incentives and prizes for families to earn along the way.

To register, call Children's Hospital of Wisconsin at 715-848-1457.

LENA Start is made possible through a partnership between the Marathon County Public Library, the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service (WIPPS,) Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin-Central Wisconsin. To learn more about this program and how it works, visit the LENA Research Foundation website or contact Dr. Corina Norrbom at 715-881-1816.
