In the Night Watchman, Erdrich creates a fictional world populated with memorable characters who are forced to grapple with the worst and best impulses of human nature, including Thomas, the night watchman at a jewel bearing plant; Patrice, who makes jewel bearings at the plant and who helps shield her mother and brother from their alcoholic father; and Wood Mountain, a young Chippewa boxer trying to make the most out of living in an impoverished reservation.
