SUMMARY:Marathon City: Book Club: “The Funeral Ladies of Ellerie County” by Claire Swinarski
DESCRIPTION:Join us and other book lovers for a discussion of a variety of books—new and old\, fiction and nonfiction! This March\, our group will discuss “The Funeral Ladies of Ellerie County” by Claire Swinarski. \nEsther has been cooking for funerals in the Northwoods of Wisconsin for seventy years. Known locally as the “funeral ladies”\, she and her cohort have worked hard to keep the mourners of Ellerie County fed—it is her firm belief that there is very little a warm casserole and a piece of cherry pie can’t fix. But\, after falling for an internet scam that puts her home at risk\, the proud Larson family matriarch is the one in need of help these days. \nEveryone is welcome to join the discussion! Stop by the library to pick up a copy of the book to check out. Call 715-443-2775 for more information.

SUMMARY:Edgar: Book Club: “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our March book club to discuss “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi. \nTwo half-sisters\, Effia and Esi\, are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia\, her sister\, Esi\, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons\, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade\, and shipped off to America\, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana\, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children into America. From the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration\, from the coal mines of Pratt City\, Alabama\, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem\, right up through the present day\, Homegoing makes history visceral\, and captures\, with singular and stunning immediacy\, how the memory of captivity came to be inscribed in the soul of a nation. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library to pick up a copy of the book to check out. For more information\, please contact us at 715-352-3155.

SUMMARY:Hatley: Book Club: “The School for Good Mothers” by Jessamine Chan
DESCRIPTION:Join us and other book lovers for a discussion of “The School for Good Mothers” by Jessamine Chan. \nFrida Liu is struggling. She doesn’t have a career worthy of her Chinese immigrant parents’ sacrifices. What’s worse is she can’t persuade her husband\, Gust\, to give up his wellness-obsessed younger mistress. Only with their angelic daughter Harriet does Frida finally feel she’s attained the perfection expected of her. Until Frida has a horrible day. The state has its eyes on mothers like Frida—ones who check their phones while their kids are on the playground; who let their children walk home alone; in other words\, mothers who only have one lapse of judgement. Now\, a host of government officials will determine if Frida is a candidate for a Big Brother-like institution that measures the success or failure of a mother’s devotion. SUMMARY:Athens: Book Club: “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for our March book club to discuss “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver. \nDellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she became pregnant at seventeen. Now\, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm\, she has settled for permanent disappointment but seeks momentary escape through an obsessive flirtation with a younger man. As she hikes up a mountain road behind her house to a secret tryst\, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent\, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle\, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists\, religious leaders\, and the media. The bewildering emergency draws rural farmers into unexpected acquaintance with urbane journalists\, opportunists\, sightseers\, and a striking biologist with his own stake in the outcome. As the community lines up to judge the woman and her miracle\, Dellarobia confronts her family\, her church\, her town\, and a larger world\, in a flight toward truth that could undo all she has ever believed. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library for a copy of the book to check out. For more information\, please contact us at 715-257-7292.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the As the Page Turns Book Club to discuss “Blessing in Disguise” by Danielle Steel. \nAs a young intern at an art gallery in Paris\, Isabelle McAvoy meets Putnam Armstrong\, wealthy\, gentle\, older\, and secluded from the world. Isabelle’s relationship with Putnam\, and her time at his château on the Normandy coast\, are the stuff of dreams. But it turns real when she becomes pregnant\, for she knows that marriage is out of the question. When Isabelle returns to New York\, she enters a new relationship that she hopes will be more stable and traditional. With two young daughters and no husband\, Isabelle finally and unexpectedly finds happiness and a love that gives her a third child\, a baby as happy as her beloved father. And yet\, once again\, life brings dramatic changes. \nThe three girls grow up to be very different women\, and Isabelle’s relationship with each of them is unique. SUMMARY:Mosinee: Book Club: “The Glassmaker” by Tracy Chevalier
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled due to inclement weather. Join library staff and fellow book lovers to discuss “The Glassmaker” by Tracy Chevalier for our April book club. \nIn 1486\, Orsola Rosso is the eldest daughter in a family of glassblowers in Murano\, Italy. As a woman\, she is not meant to blow glass—but when her father dies\, she teaches herself to make beads in secret\, and her work becomes the cornerstone of the Rosso family fortunes. Skipping like a stone through the centuries\, we follow Orsola and her family as they live through creative triumph and heartbreaking loss\, from a plague rearing its head over Venice to Continental soldiers stripping its palazzos bare\, from the domination of Murano and its maestros to the transformation of the city of trade into a city of tourists. In every era\, the Rosso women ensure that their work\, and their bonds\, endure. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library for a copy of the book to check out. SUMMARY:Stratford: Book Club: “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” by Kate DiCamillo
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for our March book club to discuss “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” by Kate DiCamillo. \nOnce\, in a house on Egypt Street\, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself\, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene\, who adored him completely. And then\, one day\, he was lost. America’s beloved storyteller takes us on an extraordinary journey\, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman\, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. Along the way\, we are shown a miracle—that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love\, to lose\, and to love again. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library to pick up a copy of the book. Can’t make it? Join us to discuss the same book for our evening book club on March 24. For more information\, please contact us at 715-687-4420.

SUMMARY:Stratford: Evening Book Club: "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo
For more information\, please contact us at 715-687-4420.

SUMMARY:Rothschild: Book Club: “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt
DESCRIPTION:Please join library staff and fellow book lovers for our March book club to discuss “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt. \nAfter Tova Sullivan’s husband died\, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium\, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope\, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son\, Erik\, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus\, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Ever the detective\, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library to check out a copy of the book. For more information\, please contact us at 715-359-6208.

SUMMARY:Wausau: Book Club: "The House of My Mother" by Shari Franke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our March book club to discuss “The House of My Mother: A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom” by Shari Franke. Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother\, Ruby Franke\, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel\, 8 Passengers\, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined. As the family’s YouTube notoriety grew\, so too did Ruby’s delusions of righteousness. Fueled by the sadistic influence of relationship coach Jodi Hildebrandt\, together they implemented an inhumane and merciless disciplinary regime. Ruby and Jodi were arrested in Utah in 2023 on multiple charges of aggravated child abuse. On that fateful day\, Shari shared a photo online of a police car outside their home. Her caption had one word: “Finally.” \nFor the first time\, Shari will reveal the disturbing truth behind 8 Passengers and her family’s devastating involvement with Jodi Hildebrandt’s cultish life coaching program\, “ConneXions.” No stone is left unturned as Shari exposes the perils of influencer culture and shares for the first time her battle for truth and survival in the face of her mother’s cruelty. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome. Stop by the main desk at MCPL-Wausau to grab a book that’s ready to check out! For more information\, please contact us at 715-261-7230.
