Doctor\, Harvard professor\, renowned infectious-disease specialist\, anthropologist\, the recipient of a MacArthur “genius” grant\, world-class Robin Hood\, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat\, and in medical school found his life’s calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. \nMountains Beyond Mountains takes us from Harvard to Haiti\, Peru\, Cuba\, and Russia as Farmer changes minds and practices through his dedication to the philosophy that “the only real nation is humanity”—a philosophy that is embodied in the small public charity he founded\, Partners in Health. He enlists the help of the Gates Foundation\, George Soros\, the U.N.’s World Health Organization\, and others in his quest to cure the world. Her mother\, Ruby Franke\, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel\, 8 Passengers\, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined. As the family’s YouTube notoriety grew\, so too did Ruby’s delusions of righteousness. Fueled by the sadistic influence of relationship coach Jodi Hildebrandt\, together they implemented an inhumane and merciless disciplinary regime. SUMMARY:Wausau: Summer at Mead: Wildflowers & Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Join us this summer for field trips to the Mead Wildlife Area and experience unforgettable outdoor activities for all ages! Everyone is invited to join us on August 13 to stop and smell\, touch\, and see the beautiful wildflowers! Participants will identify native plants and wildflowers\, and discuss the importance of pollinators and seed saving. \nMeet at MCPL Wausau in the lower library parking lot on West Washington Street and hop on our bus for free transportation departing promptly at 12:15 pm. After our activities\, we’ll take the bus back to MCPL Wausau and arrive by 3:45 p.m. This free event is open to all ages\, but please note that minors MUST be accompanied by an adult on all field trips.  Registration is required for this event by registering online or by calling. Registration for each event opens one month prior\, so check back here to register if registering online. These events happen rain or shine! See below for important information regarding library parking. For more information about the event or to register\, call 715-261-7230. For Mead-specific questions\, call 715-457-6771. Larger groups are asked to please contact Mead Wildlife Area directly to better accommodate your group. \nParking: Parking in the upper library lot on North First Street is free\, however\, space is limited. Parking in the lower lot is managed by the city. You must register your car at the booth or via the Passport app. It is free for the first two hours\, and it’s $1.00 per additional hour.

SUMMARY:Central Wisconsin Book Festival (CWBF)
DESCRIPTION:The Central Wisconsin Book Festival began in 2017 as an initiative of the Marathon County Public Library in Wausau\, Wisconsin\, and takes place annually around the last weekend of September. The festival remains under MCPL’s umbrella and is organized by a handful of community volunteers. In 2021\, our festival expanded to include the participation of the Portage County Public Library in Stevens Point\, WI and McMillan Memorial Library in Wisconsin Rapids\, WI. Our three libraries remain annual partners for this festival and you’ll find events in a variety of places in each city! \nThe goal of the festival is to provide book lovers in central Wisconsin a chance to hear and meet a multitude of authors—some they know\, some they don’t—over the course of several days. In addition to fostering a connection between author and audience\, our festival gives people in our communities a chance to build their own connections through their mutual passion for literature in its many forms and genres. When Annie decides to stand up for herself\, and the entire town of Calumet\, nearly everyone believes she may have taken on more than she is prepared to handle. In Annie’s hands lie the miners’ fortunes and their health\, her husband’s wrath over her growing independence\, and her own reputation as she faces the threat of prison and discovers a forbidden love.
