DESCRIPTION:Get ready to dig into a summer of discovery! In 2026\, libraries across the country will invite readers of all ages to “Unearth a Story\,” a theme inspired by the wonder of dinosaurs\, paleontology\, and archaeology. These fascinating subjects tap into a natural sense of curiosity and imagination\, encouraging kids and families to ask questions\, explore the past\, and uncover something new. It’s also an invitation to dive into great books\, discover hidden stories\, and explore the ideas and experiences that shape our world. \nOur summer programming has something for all ages\, but it is especially geared towards school-age children\, tweens and teens. \nVisit your library in June to pick up an activity book! Inside you’ll find a complete listing of our summer activities and performances. DESCRIPTION:Calling all creative writers! Our illustrators need you to bring their worlds to life in writing! Write a short story inspired by one of our winning pieces of art from our Illustration Contest\, in which artists created artwork aligning with our summer library theme\, “Unearthing a Story.” The contest will begin on Monday\, July 6\, 2026. The deadline for submission is Monday\, August 31\, 2026. There are two separate age groups\, Teen (13-18) and Adult (19+). Winning artwork selections will be posted on our website early July for viewing. \nSubmissions must be: \n\nOriginal\, unpublished work using no Artificial Intelligence\nRelevant to the theme: Unearthing a Story\nNot exceeding 5\,000 words\nDigital and not handwritten\nContaining no identifying names within the story or its pages\, including the author’s name\nSuitable and appropriate for a general audience\nCreated by a Marathon County resident\n\nSubmitting your work: \n\nWritten work should be uploaded as a Microsoft Word Document or Google Doc and sent to the email address: contest@mcpl.us with the subject heading: Creating Writing Contest 2026 – (Your Age Group Here). Include your full name in the email as well as the title of your story. This July\, the group will discuss “Here One Moment” by Liane Moriarty. \nAside from a delay\, there will be no problems. The flight will be smooth\, it will land safely. Everyone who gets on the plane will get off. But almost all of them will be forever changed. Because on this ordinary\, short\, domestic flight\, something extraordinary happens. People learn how and when they are going to die. For some\, their death is far in the future—age 103!—and they laugh. But for six passengers\, their predicted deaths are not far away at all. How do they know this? There were interesting people on the flight\, but none would become as famous as “The Death Lady.” Not a single passenger or crew member will later recall noticing her board the plane. A few months later\, one passenger dies exactly as she predicted. Then two more passengers die\, again\, as she said they would. Soon no one is thinking this is simply an entertaining story at a cocktail party. If you were told you only had a certain amount of time left to live\, would you do things differently? DESCRIPTION:Join us this summer for field trips to the Mead Wildlife Area and experience unforgettable outdoor activities for all ages! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Wait\, it’s definitely a bird! Everyone is invited to join us on July 23 for bird watching and identification. We’ll show you how to use binoculars and other birding equipment. Participants will also learn unique features specific to birds. \nMeet at MCPL Wausau in the lower library parking lot on West Washington Street and hop on our bus for free transportation departing promptly at 12:15 pm. After our activities\, we’ll take the bus back to MCPL Wausau and arrive by 3:45 p.m. This free event is open to all ages\, but please note that minors MUST be accompanied by an adult on all field trips.  Registration is required for this event by registering online or by calling. Registration for each event opens one month prior\, so check back here to register if registering online. These events happen rain or shine! Larger groups are asked to please contact Mead Wildlife Area directly to better accommodate your group. \nParking: Parking in the upper library lot on North First Street is free\, however\, space is limited. Parking in the lower lot is managed by the city. You must register your car at the booth or via the Passport app. It is free for the first two hours\, and it’s $1.00 per additional hour.

SUMMARY:Wausau: Neurographic Art
DESCRIPTION:Adults and teens are invited to create neurographic art! Neurographic art combines abstract drawing with mindfulness and centers on creating neuron-like lines and shapes. Participants will be given a brief introduction to the technique\, followed by time to set a mindful intention. Then\, begin your drawing and add color to your artwork. Unlock your creative potential\, express yourself in a new way\, and free the pressure of achieving perfection. This program will have two sessions; the first on July 16 from 2:30-3:30\, and the second on July 23 from 5:30-6:30.
