SUMMARY:Wausau: Book Club: "Lady Tan's Circle of Women" by Lisa See
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for engaging discussions of books each month! In May\, we will meet to discuss “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” by Lisa See. \nAccording to Confucius\, “an educated woman is a worthless woman\,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family\, yet haunted by death\, separations\, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China\, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine\, the Four Examinations—looking\, listening\, touching\, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient. \nFrom a young age\, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses\, many of which relate to childbearing\, alongside a young midwife-in-training\, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose. But when Yunxian is sent into an arranged marriage\, her mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and from helping the women and girls in the household. How might a woman like Yunxian break free of these traditions\, go on to treat women and girls from every level of society\, and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five centuries later? \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome. Stop by the main desk at MCPL-Wausau to grab a book that’s ready to check out! For more information\, please contact us at 715-261-7230.

SUMMARY:Wausau: Book Club: "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for an engaging book discussion! This month\, we will meet to discuss “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir. \nThe sole survivor on a desperate\, last-chance mission to save both humanity and Earth\, Ryland Grace is hurtled into the depths of space when he must conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. Ryland Grace has been asleep for a very\, very long time. He’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home\, with nothing but two corpses for company. He can’t remember his own name\, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space\, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And thanks to an unexpected ally\, he just might have a chance. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the main desk at MCPL-Wausau to grab a book that’s ready to check out! For more information\, please contact us at 715-261-7230.

SUMMARY:Wausau: ADRC: Dementia Overview
DESCRIPTION:MCPL is partnering with the ADRC this spring to bring a series of programs designed to provide information and resources regarding dementia. Join us on April 6 as we give an overview of dementia. What is considered “normal aging” and when should you be concerned? Forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging—but when memory loss and other thinking problems start to interfere with daily life\, it may be a sign of dementia. Dementia is a general term for conditions that affect memory\, language\, problem-solving\, and other cognitive abilities. \nWhether you’re adjusting to a new diagnosis\, looking to better support someone you care about\, or are interested in learning more\, this presentation—led by staff from the Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Central Wisconsin—will provide a helpful introduction to understanding dementia. \nThis free event is open to adults and no registration is required. We’ll meet in the Community Room. For more information\, please contact us at 715-261-7230.

SUMMARY:Marathon City: Book Club: “The Women” by Kristin Hannah with Special Guest Kathy Mero
DESCRIPTION:Join us at MCPL-Marathon City for a special book club gathering as we discuss “The Women” by Kristin Hannah. Not only will we discuss the book\, but we’ll be joined by special guest\, Kathy Mero\, who served as a U.S Navy nurse during the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Mero will discuss her experience and how it relates to the book. \nWomen can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words\, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched\, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents\, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965\, the world is changing\, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam\, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. “The Women” is the story of one woman gone to war\, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism\, “The Women” is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era. \nEveryone is welcome to join the discussion! No registration is required. Stop by MCPL-Marathon City to pick up a copy of the book. For more information\, please contact us at 715-443-2775.
