SUMMARY:Mosinee: Book Club: "The Radium Girls" by Kate Moore
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our January book club to discuss “The Radium Girls” by Kate Moore. \nAs World War I raged across the globe\, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories\, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe\, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark\, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job\, these “shining girls” were considered the luckiest alive—until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold\, they found themselves embroiled in one of America’s biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights. The Radium Girls explores the strength of extraordinary women in the face of almost impossible circumstances and the astonishing legacy they left behind. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! For more information\, please contact us at 715-693-2144.

SUMMARY:Stratford: Evening Book Club: “The Thursday Murder Club” by Richard Osman
DESCRIPTION:Come join library staff and other book lovers for our Evening Book Club to discuss “The Thursday Murder Club” by Richard Osman this January. \nIn a peaceful retirement village\, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves The Thursday Murder Club. There’s Red Ron\, the infamous former socialist firebrand\, still causing trouble; gentle Joyce\, widowed\, pining for another resident\, but surely not as innocent as she seems; Ibrahim\, a former therapist who understands the darker side of human nature; and Elizabeth? Well\, no one is quite sure who she really is\, but she’s definitely not a woman to underestimate. When a local developer is found dead\, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case. Can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer before it’s too late? \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! For more information\, please contact us at 715-687-4420.

SUMMARY:Rothschild: Book Club: “The Frozen River" by Ariel Lawhon
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our January book club to discuss “The Frozen River” by Ariel Lawhon. \nA gripping historical mystery based on the real-life diary entries of Martha Ballard\, an 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history. Maine\, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes\, entombing a man in the ice\, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer\, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death\, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier\, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen–one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion\, declaring the death to be an accident\, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own. Over the course of one winter\, as the trial nears\, and whispers and prejudices mount\, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal\, implicating those she loves\, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! SUMMARY:Wausau: Book Club: "Circe" by Madeline Miller
DESCRIPTION:Please join library staff and fellow book lovers for our January book club to discuss “Circe” by Madeline Miller. \nCirce is not as powerful as her father Helios\, nor as viciously alluring as her mother Perse. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship\, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft\, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. Zeus banishes her to a deserted island\, where she hones her occult craft\, tames wild beasts\, and crosses paths with many figures in mythology. When Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods\, she finds herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the main desk after December 29 for a copy of the book. For more information\, please contact us at 715-261-7230.

We will meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on December 4\, 8\, and 18; January 5\, 15\, and 29; and February 2\, 12\, and 16. We’ll meet in the Conference Room on the second floor. \nThese events are full and registration has been closed. Thank you for your interest! Keep an eye out for future D&D events this spring!
