SUMMARY:Stratford: Evening Book Club: “The Wager” by David Grann
DESCRIPTION:Come join library staff and fellow book lovers for our Evening Book Club this February to discuss “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck\, Mutiny and Murder” by David Grann. \n“The Wager” is a mesmerizing story of shipwreck\, survival\, and savagery\, culminating in a court martial that reveals a shocking truth. On January 28\, 1742\, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men\, barely alive\, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager\, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans\,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia. The men\, after being marooned for months and facing starvation\, built the flimsy craft and sailed for more than a hundred days\, traversing 2500 miles of storm-wracked seas. They were greeted as heroes. But then…six months later\, another\, even more decrepit craft landed on the coast of Chile. This boat contained just three castaways\, and they had a very different story to tell. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by to pick up a copy of the book to check out. For more information\, please contact us at 715-687-4420.

SUMMARY:Rothschild: Book Club: “The Bear and the Nightingale” by Katherine Arden
DESCRIPTION:Please join us and fellow book lovers for our February book club to discuss “The Bear and the Nightingale” by Katherine Arden. \nAt the edge of the Russian wilderness\, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings\, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all\, she loves the chilling story of Frost\, the blue-eyed winter demon\, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him\, her nurse says\, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil. After Vasilisa’s mother dies\, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout\, city-bred\, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces\, but Vasilisa is frightened\, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows. And indeed\, crops begin to fail\, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer\, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while\, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for marriage or confinement in a convent. As danger circles nearer\, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by for a copy of the book to check out. For more information\, please contact us at 715-359-6208.

SUMMARY:Wausau: Book Club: "The Nickel Boys" by Colson Whitehead
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our February book club to discuss “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead. \n1960s Florida. Kept on the straight and narrow by his grandmother\, Elwood Curtis is about to enroll in the local black college. But for a black boy in the Jim Crow South\, one mistake is enough to destroy the future. He is sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy\, whose mission statement says it provides “physical\, intellectual and moral training” so the delinquent boys in their charge can become “honorable and honest men.” In reality\, the Nickel Academy is a chamber of horrors\, where physical\, emotional and sexual abuse is rife\, where corrupt officials and tradesmen do a brisk trade in supplies intended for the school\, and where any boy who resists is likely to disappear “out back.” He meets Turner\, who knows that the world is crooked\, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble. A decision creates repercussions that will echo down the decades. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome. Stop by the main desk at MCPL-Wausau to grab a book that’s ready to check out! For more information\, please contact us at 715-261-7230.

SUMMARY:Wausau: History Speaks: Looking Back at the U.S. Bicentennial in Marathon County
DESCRIPTION:The Marathon County Historical Society invites the community to take part in the launch of our 2026 History Speaks lecture series\, highlighting local history. Join us on Saturday\, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. for an engaging presentation led by historian Ben Clark that looks back at the U.S. Bicentennial specifically in Marathon County. In 1976\, communities across the nation marked the 200th anniversary of the American Revolution. Here in Marathon County\, the Bicentennial became a wide-reaching community celebration that went beyond parades and fireworks. Local residents participated in time capsule burials\, ’76-themed theatrical productions\, special foot races\, beard contests\, and other creative programs that reflected a strong sense of civic pride and connection to local history. \nFifty years later\, the Bicentennial stands out as a moment of unprecedented public engagement with Marathon County’s past. Ben Clark will guide attendees through a look back at these Bicentennial celebrations\, reflecting on how national commemorations took shape at the local level and what they reveal about the community during that period. This program also offers timely perspective as the nation prepares to observe its Semiquincentennial\, the 250th anniversary of the United States. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, no registration required\, and is presented in partnership with the Marathon County Public Library and sponsored by Janke Bookstore. For more information\, please call 715-842-5750.
