SUMMARY:Stratford: Evening Book Club: "The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau" by Kristin Harmel
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for engaging discussions of books each month! In May\, we will discuss “The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau” by Kristin Harmel. \nColette Marceau has been stealing jewels for nearly as long as she can remember\, following the centuries-old code of honor instilled in her by her mother\, take only from the cruel and unkind\, and give to those in need. Never was their family tradition more important than seven decades earlier\, during the Second World War\, when Annabel and Colette worked side by side in Paris to fund the French Resistance. But one night in 1942\, it all went wrong. Annabel was arrested by the Germans\, and Colette’s four-year-old sister\, Liliane\, disappeared in the chaos of the raid\, along with an exquisite diamond bracelet sewn into the hem of her nightgown for safekeeping. Soon after\, Annabel was executed\, and Liliane’s body was found floating in the Seine—but the bracelet was nowhere to be found. \nSeventy years later\, Colette has done her best to put her tragic past behind her\, but her life begins to unravel when the long-missing bracelet suddenly turns up in a museum exhibit in Boston. If Colette can discover where it has been all this time—and who owns it now—she may finally learn the truth about what happened to her sister. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library to pick up a copy of the book. For more information\, please contact us at 715-687-4420.

SUMMARY:Rothschild: Book Club: "The Women" by Kristin Hannah
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for engaging discussions of books each month! In May\, the group will discuss “The Women” by Kristin Hannah. \nWomen can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words\, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched\, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents\, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965\, the world is changing\, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam\, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. “The Women” is the story of one woman gone to war\, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism\, “The Women” is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library to check out a copy of the book. For more information\, please contact us at 715-359-6208.

SUMMARY:Wausau: Book Club: "Lady Tan's Circle of Women" by Lisa See
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for engaging discussions of books each month! In May\, we will meet to discuss “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” by Lisa See. \nAccording to Confucius\, “an educated woman is a worthless woman\,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family\, yet haunted by death\, separations\, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China\, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine\, the Four Examinations—looking\, listening\, touching\, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient. \nFrom a young age\, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses\, many of which relate to childbearing\, alongside a young midwife-in-training\, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose. But when Yunxian is sent into an arranged marriage\, her mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and from helping the women and girls in the household. How might a woman like Yunxian break free of these traditions\, go on to treat women and girls from every level of society\, and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five centuries later? \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome. Stop by the main desk at MCPL-Wausau to grab a book that’s ready to check out! For more information\, please contact us at 715-261-7230.
