SUMMARY:Spencer: Book Club: “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for engaging discussions of books each month! In September\, the As the Page Turns Book Club will discuss “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks. A discarded painting in a junk pile\, a skeleton in an attic\, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands\, a Pulitzer Prize winner braids a sweeping story of spirit\, obsession\, and injustice across American history. Kentucky\, 1850. Jarrett\, an enslaved groom\, and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. As the nation erupts in civil war\, an itinerant young artist who has made his name painting the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night\, he reunites with the stallion and his groom\, very far from the glamor of any racetrack. New York City\, 1954. Martha Jackson\, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters\, becomes obsessed with a 19th equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance. Washington\, DC\, 2019. Jess\, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia\, and Theo\, a Nigerian-American art historian\, find themselves unexpectedly drawn to one another through their shared interest in the horse–one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power and endurance\, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! Stop by the library to pick up a copy of the book. For more information\, contact 715-659-3996.

In July 1913\, twenty-five-year-old Annie Clements had seen enough of the world to know that it was unfair. In Annie’s hands lie the miners’ fortunes and their health\, her husband’s wrath over her growing independence\, and her own reputation as she faces the threat of prison and discovers a forbidden love. On her fierce quest for justice\, Annie will discover just how much she is willing to sacrifice for her own independence and the families of Calumet. \nNo registration is required\, and all are welcome! SUMMARY:Central Wisconsin Book Festival (CWBF)
DESCRIPTION:The Central Wisconsin Book Festival began in 2017 as an initiative of the Marathon County Public Library in Wausau\, Wisconsin\, and takes place annually around the last weekend of September. The festival remains under MCPL’s umbrella and is organized by a handful of community volunteers. In 2021\, our festival expanded to include the participation of the Portage County Public Library in Stevens Point\, WI and McMillan Memorial Library in Wisconsin Rapids\, WI. Our three libraries remain annual partners for this festival and you’ll find events in a variety of places in each city! \nThe goal of the festival is to provide book lovers in central Wisconsin a chance to hear and meet a multitude of authors—some they know\, some they don’t—over the course of several days. In addition to fostering a connection between author and audience\, our festival gives people in our communities a chance to build their own connections through their mutual passion for literature in its many forms and genres. Past events include traditional author readings and Q&As\, panel discussions\, workshops\, live storytelling events and more. Our festival is almost entirely grant funded (see our “Supporters” page)\, and all events are always free to attend! \nFor more information\, please email cwbf@mcpl.us. \nAlso: sign up for email updates and give us some input about future festivals. \nOr\, connect with us on social media:\n— Facebook: facebook.com/cwbookfest\n— Instagram: instagram.com/centralwisconsinbookfestival \n\n	\n \n	\n 1 event found.	\n	\n \n	\n\n \n	\n\n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n	Events\n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n \n	\n \n	\n\n	\n\n	\n\n\n	\n	Today\n\n	\n	\n \n \n Upcoming \n \n Upcoming \n \n \n	\n\n	\n	\n Select date.	\n	\n	\n	\n \n	\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n	\n	\n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n	\n \n September 2026 \n	\n\n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n Wed \n \n 23 \n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n	\n\n\n \n\n \n \n	\n Central Wisconsin Book Festival (CWBF)	\n\n \n \n Wed.\, September 23–Sun.\, September 27	\n	\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n	\n\n Central Wisconsin Book Festival (CWBF)\n	\n\n\n \n	\n Marathon County Public Library—Wausau Headquarters	\n	\n 300 First Street\, Wausau\, WI\, United States	\n	\n	 \n	+10 more\n\n \n\n \n	This festival provides book lovers a chance to hear and meet a multitude of authors over the course of several days. SUMMARY:Wausau: Book Club: “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff and other book lovers for engaging discussions of books each month! This September\, we will meet to discuss “The Hobbit\, or There and Back Again” by J.R.R. Tolkien. Smaug certainly looked fast asleep\, almost dead and dark\, with scarcely a snore more than a whiff of unseen steam\, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out on to the floor when he caught a sudden thin and piercing ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug’s left eye. He was only pretending to sleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance! Whisked away from his comfortable\, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole in Bag End by Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves\, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent\, a large and very dangerous dragon. Although quite reluctant to take part in this quest\, Bilbo surprises even himself by his resourcefulness and his skill as a burglar! \nThis event is open to adults\, with no registration required. Stop by the main desk at MCPL-Wausau to grab a book that’s ready to check out a month prior! For more information\, please contact us at 715-261-7230.
