Join us on Saturday\, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. for an engaging presentation led by historian Ben Clark that looks back at the U.S. Bicentennial specifically in Marathon County. In 1976\, communities across the nation marked the 200th anniversary of the American Revolution. Here in Marathon County\, the Bicentennial became a wide-reaching community celebration that went beyond parades and fireworks. Local residents participated in time capsule burials\, ’76-themed theatrical productions\, special foot races\, beard contests\, and other creative programs that reflected a strong sense of civic pride and connection to local history. \nFifty years later\, the Bicentennial stands out as a moment of unprecedented public engagement with Marathon County’s past. Ben Clark will guide attendees through a look back at these Bicentennial celebrations\, reflecting on how national commemorations took shape at the local level and what they reveal about the community during that period. DESCRIPTION:Two hundred years ago the Erie Canal was completed\, a 363-mile waterway that connected the Great Lakes and the Hudson River. It revolutionized American commerce; shifted national trade patterns; fueled the growth of New York City; and helped spark the Transportation Revolution. Yet this great work of labor and innovation is largely forgotten today. Join us as the Marathon County History Society welcomes Brett Barker to tell the story of this “Great Ditch” and the way it changed American history from then until today. \nDr. Brett Barker is Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History and International Studies at UW-Stevens Point and a member of the Board of Directors of the Marathon County Historical Society. DESCRIPTION:The Marathon County Historical Society is proud to welcome Rick Lohr as our guest speaker for its History Speaks series\, presenting “We Can Do That: The Story of Larry and Elsie Lohr from the Depression to the Pine Valley Golf Course.” \nThis month is a look at the story of two young people of the Depression Era who succeeded in businesses in Marathon City. Their entrepreneurship in Lohr Furniture and Funeral Homes\, and in developing Pine Valley Golf Course were just part of their contributions to the community and economy of Marathon City. They left their family a legacy of community service\, perseverance\, and risk taking. \nRick holds a master’s degree in teaching from UW-Stevens Point\, with a concentration in 20th century East Asian history. Rick Lohr is a retired world history teacher at Wausau West and Newman High Schools\, and owner/manager of Pine Valley Golf Course. The talk draws from their acclaimed book\, “We Will Always Be Here: A Guide to Exploring and Understanding the History of LGBTQ+ Activism in Wisconsin.” The work is rich with primary sources—diary entries\, love letters\, zines\, advertisements\, and oral histories—that illuminate the diverse voices and experiences within Wisconsin’s LGBTQ+ past. \nJenny Kalvaitis holds a master’s degree in Public History and brings over a decade of experience in informal and museum education. Kristen Whitson\, with a master’s degree in Library and Information Science\, has specialized in digital preservation\, community and Indigenous archives\, and LGBTQ+ archival work. SUMMARY:Wausau: History Speaks: "Honor in the Air" Documentary
DESCRIPTION:In August\, the Marathon County Historical Society‘s History Speaks series focuses on Captain Scott Alwin\, born and raised in Wisconsin and who served five tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot\, with a free documentary about his life and service! The Historical Society will screen “Honor in the Air: The story of Captain Scott Alwin and the 68th AHC\,” a documentary produced and directed by Susan Reetz. Alwin earned a record 136 Air Medals\, Vietnam Republic Medal\, Purple Heart\, Bronze Star\, Silver Star\, and Distinguished Flying Cross\, all with oak leaf clusters\, but even more important\, he earned the respect and admiration of his fellow soldiers and family. \nThe film contains never- before-seen footage filmed during the Vietnam War by Alwin’s Crew Chief\, Frans VandenBroek\, as well as other archival footage and photos\, and interviews with Alwin’s remaining siblings\, his widow and children\, a close friend\, and several members of the 68th Assault Helicopter Company. What emerges is a moving portrait of a humble man dedicated to his family and his country and doing his best to make the world a better place.
