SUMMARY:Wausau: History Speaks: Looking Back at the U.S. Bicentennial in Marathon County
DESCRIPTION:The Marathon County Historical Society invites the community to take part in the launch of our 2026 History Speaks lecture series\, highlighting local history. Join us on Saturday\, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. for an engaging presentation led by historian Ben Clark that looks back at the U.S. Bicentennial specifically in Marathon County. In 1976\, communities across the nation marked the 200th anniversary of the American Revolution. Here in Marathon County\, the Bicentennial became a wide-reaching community celebration that went beyond parades and fireworks. Local residents participated in time capsule burials\, ’76-themed theatrical productions\, special foot races\, beard contests\, and other creative programs that reflected a strong sense of civic pride and connection to local history. \nFifty years later\, the Bicentennial stands out as a moment of unprecedented public engagement with Marathon County’s past. Ben Clark will guide attendees through a look back at these Bicentennial celebrations\, reflecting on how national commemorations took shape at the local level and what they reveal about the community during that period. This program also offers timely perspective as the nation prepares to observe its Semiquincentennial\, the 250th anniversary of the United States. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, no registration required\, and is presented in partnership with the Marathon County Public Library and sponsored by Janke Bookstore. For more information\, please call 715-842-5750.

SUMMARY:Wausau: History Speaks: Building the Eerie Canal
DESCRIPTION:Two hundred years ago the Erie Canal was completed\, a 363-mile waterway that connected the Great Lakes and the Hudson River. Join us as the Marathon County History Society welcomes Brett Barker to tell the story of this “Great Ditch” and the way it changed American history from then until today. \nDr. Brett Barker is Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History and International Studies at UW-Stevens Point and a member of the Board of Directors of the Marathon County Historical Society. He has been giving presentations at the MCHS for over twenty years. \nThis event is free and open to the public—no registration required—and is presented in partnership with the Marathon County Public Library and sponsored by Janke Bookstore. For more information\, please call 715-842-5750.

SUMMARY:Wausau: History Speaks: One Room Schools
DESCRIPTION:The Marathon County Historical Society is proud to welcome author Susan R. Apps-Bodilly\, as a guest speaker for the History Speaks series presenting on one-room schools. This presentation returns you to a time when Wisconsin’s rural children attended a one-room school with all eight grades in one room with one teacher. This interactive talk will celebrate the days when brothers and sisters went to school together; children put a jar of soup in a pot on the wood stove to warm for lunch\, played recess games like anti-over\, and practiced saying their “piece” for the annual Christmas program. Susan will talk about her research process and how she gathered stories for her book. Susan is a retired educator and author of “One Room Schools: Stories from the Days of 1 Room\, 1 Teacher\, 8 Grades.” She taught elementary and middle school students for 34 years. She holds a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. \nDirectly following the presentation\, the Little Red Schoolhouse in Marathon Park will be open for tours from 3:30-4:30 pm. This one-room schoolhouse from 1895 (formally Spooner School) was moved to Marathon Park in 1963 and hosts 4th grade classes every year to experience a typical school day in the early 1900’s. \nThis event is free and open to the public—no registration required—and is presented in partnership with the Marathon County Public Library and sponsored by Janke Bookstore. For more information\, please call 715-842-5750.

SUMMARY:Wausau: History Speaks: The (Original) Charleston
DESCRIPTION:In 1925\, the country was swept up in a new dance called the Charleston. It had debuted to the world on the Broadway stage of the production Runnin’ Wild back in 1923\, and as the popular dance made its way to Central Wisconsin\, it was being stepped to a particular rhythm. This program will look at the song\, “Charleston.” It often accompanied the famous dance during its heyday in the 1920s (and since)\, but the song also has a larger story as a great jazz standard in its own right. \nJoin us to learn about the particular history of this song\, the surprising number of recordings made of it\, and how people back in the 1920s thought about music. It will be presented by Ben Clark\, archivist and historian at the Marathon County Historical Society. Clark wrote his master’s thesis on jazz history and has presented for History Speaks in the past on topics ranging from the story of local public transportation to the Fromm Brothers’ fur farm. \nThis free program is presented live at the Woodson History Center\, no registration required. The History Speaks lecture series is presented in conjunction with the Marathon County Public Library and is sponsored by Janke Book Store. Please call 715-842-5750 for more information.
