DESCRIPTION:Join us in a discussion of Emily Henry’s “Book Lovers” for our July book club. \nNora Stephens’ life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one\, not the laidback dream girl\, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact\, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients\, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent\, and her beloved little sister Libby. Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls\, North Carolina for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away—with visions of a small-town transformation for Nora\, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story. But instead of picnics in meadows\, or run-ins with a handsome country doctor or bulging-forearmed bartender\, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie Lastra\, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute. If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine\, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero\, but as they are thrown together again and again—in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow—what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves. \nNo registration is required and all are welcome! DESCRIPTION:Calling all storytellers! Whether you’re a seasoned writer or have an idea that’s ready to be put on paper\, this is your chance to shine. Marathon County residents are invited to join us for an exciting creative writing contest where your words take center stage. Craft a short story\, a vivid poem\, or a captivating piece of fiction. With exciting prizes for each age group and a chance to see your work in the spotlight\, this is the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself and share your voice! \nThe contest will begin on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025 and the deadline for submission will be Monday\, July 14\, 2025. There will be two separate age groups: Teen (ages 13-18) and Adult (ages 19+.) \nSubmissions should be: \n\nAn original\, unpublished piece of work using no Artificial Intelligence\nAttached in the form of a word processing document\, such as a Microsoft Word Document or PDF\nNot exceeding a word count of 5\,000\nSuitable and appropriate for a general audience\nContain no identifying names within the story or on its pages\, including author’s name\nWritten by a Marathon County resident\n\nSubmitting your work: \n\nSubmit your work to the email address: contest@mcpl.us with the subject heading: “Creative Writing Contest 2025 – ‘Your Age Group’.”\nInclude your full name in the email (Again\, make sure to not include your name anywhere in the story itself. We want judges to be able to read the stories anonymously.)\n\nThere will be separate winners for each age group\, Teen and Adult. First place winners will receive some library swag\, a gift card\, and the chance to participate in an author reading & recognition ceremony during the 2025 Central Wisconsin Book Festival the last weekend of September. Second & Third places will be also be recognized and receive prizes. Later to follow\, all winning stories will be illustrated by local artists participating in our Illustration Contest held in August! Applicants must be able to receive their prize in person. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our June book club gathering as the group discusses “H is for Hawk” by Helen Macdonald. \nAs a child\, Helen Macdonald was determined to become a falconer. She learned the arcane terminology and read all the classic books\, including T.H. White’s tortured masterpiece\, “The Goshawk\,” which describes White’s struggle to train a hawk as a spiritual struggle. When her father dies and she is knocked sideways by grief\, she becomes obsessed with the idea of training her own goshawk. She buys Mabel for £800 on a Scottish quayside and takes her home to Cambridge. Then she fills the freezer with hawk food and unplugs the phone\, ready to embark on the long\, strange business of trying to train this wildest of animals. \nEveryone is welcome to join the discussion! DESCRIPTION:Join fellow readers and library staff in May as the group discusses “The Souls of Lost Lake” by Jaime Jo Wright. \nWren Blythe has long enjoyed being among the Northwoods\, helping her father with programming at a youth camp. But when a little girl in the area goes missing\, an all-out search ensues\, reviving the decades-old campfire story of Ava Coons\, the murderess\, who still roams the woods. Joining the search\, Wren stumbles upon the Coons cabin ruins and a rotting porcelain doll. But even more terrifying is seeing her name etched on the doll’s foot like a sinister omen. In 1930\, Ava Coons has spent the last ten years carrying the mantle of mystery since she emerged from the forest as an eight-year-old girl\, spattered with blood\, dragging a logger’s axe. She has accepted she’ll never remember what happened to her family. When a member of the town of Tempter’s Creek is murdered\, rumors spread that Ava’s secret is more malicious than previously imagined. DESCRIPTION:Join our Edgar Branch staff and other book lovers for a friendly\, engaging discussion each month! \nFirst published in French as a serial in 1909\, “The Phantom of the Opera” is a riveting story that revolves around the young\, Swedish Christine Daaé. Her father\, a famous musician\, dies\, and she is raised in the Paris Opera House with his dying promise of a protective angel of music to guide her. After a time at the opera house\, she begins hearing a voice\, who eventually teaches her how to sing beautifully. All goes well until Christine’s childhood friend Raoul comes to visit his parents\, who are patrons of the opera\, and he sees Christine when she begins successfully singing on the stage. The voice\, who is the deformed\, murderous ‘ghost’ of the opera house named Erik\, however\, grows violent in his terrible jealousy\, until Christine suddenly disappears. If so\, stop in to create a Backpack Buddy at various MCPL locations over the summer! \nWe’ll have supplies and instructions available over the course of a week at each of seven MCPL locations\, and participants can created a beaded dragonfly or perhaps some other kind of animal creation. Add a keyring and attach it to a backpack\, and you’ll have a buddy to accompany you to school in the fall! \nFree and best suited for tweens\, no registration required.
