DESCRIPTION:Please join us in discussing “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain for our August book club. \n“The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”\, Mark Twain’s sequel to “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”\, became an instant success in the year of its publication\, 1884\, but was seen by some as unfit for children to read because of its language\, grammar\, and “uncivilized hero.” The book has sparked controversy ever since\, but most scholars continue to praise it as a modern masterpiece\, an essential read\, and one of the greatest novels in all of American literature. DESCRIPTION:Calling all artists and illustrators! Bring our creative writers’ stories to life by making a piece of artwork to illustrate a cover or a scene for our winning stories. Marathon County residents are invited to let your creativity shine as you turn someone’s written words into amazing artwork! With exciting prizes for each age group and a chance to see your work in the spotlight\, this is the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself and share your creativity. The contest will begin on Friday\, August 1st\, 2025 and the deadline for submission is Sunday\, August 31st\, 2025. There will be two separate age groups for submissions: Teen (ages 13-18) and Adult (ages 19+). Both age groups can illustrate any of the stories\, Teen or Adult. View our winning stories here! \nSubmissions should be: \n\nOriginal\, unpublished work using no Artificial Intelligence\nSuitable and appropriate for a general audience\nCreated by a Marathon County resident\n\nSubmitting your work: \n\nSubmit your work in PNG or JPG format to the email address: contest@mcpl.us with the subject heading: “Illustration Contest 2025 – ‘Your Age Group’.”\nInclude your full name in the email as well as the title of which winning story the illustration is for.\nYou may submit multiple pieces of art for different writing entries\, but only one piece will be selected as your best work. You will be eligible to win only with that chosen illustration.\nIf physical art is created\, MCPL can help you scan the art for submission as long as the artwork is 2-Dimensional and does not exceed 11 x 17 inches. You may also choose to take a picture of your physical art and send that picture in the email. Make sure your photo is clear\, has as few shadows as possible\, and is aligned in the photo as straight as you can make it.\nIf artwork is submitted well before the due date (5 days) we may be able to troubleshoot any file issues\, however\, if we have issues opening your file sent post deadline\, it will not be considered.\n\nThere will be separate winners for each age group\, Teen and Adult. First place winners will receive some library swag\, a gift card\, and the chance to participate in a recognition ceremony during the 2025 Central Wisconsin Book Festival the last weekend of September\, honoring the winning authors and illustrators. Second & Third places will also be recognized and receive prizes. All winning illustrations will be displayed at the library with artist information. DESCRIPTION:Join us in a discussion of “The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club” by Helen Simonson for our July book club. \nIt is the summer of 1919 and Constance Haverhill is without prospects. Now that all the men have returned from the front\, she has been asked to give up her cottage and her job at the estate she helped run during the war. While she looks for a position as a bookkeeper or—horror—a governess\, she’s sent as a lady’s companion to an old family friend who is convalescing at a seaside hotel. Despite having only weeks to find a permanent home\, Constance is swept up in the social whirl of Hazelbourne-on-Sea after she rescues the local baronet’s daughter\, Poppy Wirrall\, from a social faux pas.Poppy wears trousers\, operates a taxi and delivery service to employ local women\, and runs a ladies’ motorcycle club (to which she plans to add flying lessons). She and her friends enthusiastically welcome Constance into their circle. And then there is Harris\, Poppy’s recalcitrant but handsome brother—a fighter pilot recently wounded in battle—who warms in Constance’s presence. But things are more complicated than they seem in this sunny pocket of English high society. DESCRIPTION:Calling all storytellers! Whether you’re a seasoned writer or have an idea that’s ready to be put on paper\, this is your chance to shine. Marathon County residents are invited to join us for an exciting creative writing contest where your words take center stage. Craft a short story\, a vivid poem\, or a captivating piece of fiction. With exciting prizes for each age group and a chance to see your work in the spotlight\, this is the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself and share your voice! \nThe contest will begin on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025 and the deadline for submission will be Monday\, July 14\, 2025. There will be two separate age groups: Teen (ages 13-18) and Adult (ages 19+.) \nSubmissions should be: \n\nAn original\, unpublished piece of work using no Artificial Intelligence\nAttached in the form of a word processing document\, such as a Microsoft Word Document or PDF\nNot exceeding a word count of 5\,000\nSuitable and appropriate for a general audience\nContain no identifying names within the story or on its pages\, including author’s name\nWritten by a Marathon County resident\n\nSubmitting your work: \n\nSubmit your work to the email address: contest@mcpl.us with the subject heading: “Creative Writing Contest 2025 – ‘Your Age Group’.”\nInclude your full name in the email (Again\, make sure to not include your name anywhere in the story itself. We want judges to be able to read the stories anonymously.)\n\nThere will be separate winners for each age group\, Teen and Adult. First place winners will receive some library swag\, a gift card\, and the chance to participate in an author reading & recognition ceremony during the 2025 Central Wisconsin Book Festival the last weekend of September. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him\, it was Chona and Nate Timblin\, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill\, who worked together to keep the boy safe. \nAs these characters’ stories overlap and deepen\, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins of white\, Christian America struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s white establishment played in it\, McBride shows us that even in dark times\, it is love and community—heaven and earth—that sustain us. \nNo registration required\, all are welcome! DESCRIPTION:Discover a new resource at MCPL while learning more about how to trace your family history using Ancestry during this free program! \nWe’ll guide participants through some of the basics of genealogical research before covering some of the basics of Ancestry\, which can be accessed at no charge to MCPL patrons at any of our library locations. (Sorry\, patrons must be in the library to access this resource.) Patrons will also complete a basic family tree chart and begin working on family info sheets. Join us and you may find information about your long-lost ancestors! \nThis program is free and open to adults\, no registration required. DESCRIPTION:Patrons of all ages are invited to visit any MCPL location and be an artist for a weekend as we celebrate our second-annual American Artist Appreciation Month in August! \nOn Friday\, Aug. 23 and Saturday the 24th at all of our locations\, we will set up multiple artist stations with projects inspired by famous American artists. Participants can create their own art and we’ll also curate book displays about well-known American artists so patrons can learn about them and maybe find some inspiration\, too! \nAll activities are open to the public\, no registration required\, and patrons can stop by anytime their preferred MCPL location is open!
