History of the Edgar Branch

The Edgar library traces its roots back to 1928 when the Edgar Women’s Club facilitated access to books through the Wisconsin Traveling Library, which served as the local library until 1946. As the County Library expanded and began offering more services to its branches, the Village of Edgar stepped in to provide dedicated building space for the library, enabling the public to enjoy a larger and more functional library environment.

In 1994, the county-wide building program funded the remodeling of the former Edgar Bank, transforming it into a modern library space. This upgrade significantly enhanced the library’s offerings, including an expanded book collection, additional computers, and dedicated areas for family and children’s programs.

Key Milestones

  • 1948: Introduction of preschool story times at the library.
  • 1961, 1975, 1985, 1994: The Village of Edgar provided library space across four different locations.
  • 1994: Remodeling of the former Edgar Bank created an improved library space with more resources and program capacity.
