The public is invited to a series of programs at our Athens Branch about the basics of Social Security and Medicare.

We’ll be joined by Bettina Rinard, elder benefit specialist with the Aging and Disability Resource Center, who will lead three programs on these important topics September 19, October 3 and October 17.

These programs are free and open to all adults, and we ask that you please reserve a spot by calling the Athens Branch at 715-257-7292.

The first session focuses on getting ready for retirement and navigating Social Security. Preparing for retirement can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Do you retire early at 62? Do you wait for full retirement? What age is full retirement? Is there a benefit to delaying retirement? All of these are important questions. This program is designed to provide answers and help you gather the information you need to make the best choice for you. We will also discuss less commonly known benefits like family benefits, survivor’s benefits, and ex-spousal benefits.

The other two programs include:

  • Session 2: October 3, 5:30-6:30pm

Understanding Medicare – Sorting Through Medicare Alphabet Soup

Medicare can be a complicated landscape of choices, but it doesn’t have to be. This program is designed to provide an overview of Medicare and help make sense of the parts, what they mean, and how to navigate them. We will looks at defining Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D, when and how to sign up, and costs associated with coverage.

  • Session 3: October 17, 5:30-6:30pm

Navigating Medicare – Maintaining Your Coverage

The Medicare Open Enrollment period can feel like information overload. This program is designed to empower you as a consumer to select the coverage that is best for you. We will cover the difference between Parts C and D, things to consider when choosing your best option, how and when to change plans, and how to avoid common scams.
