History of the Athens Branch

The Athens library has a rich history of growth and service to the community. It began as a modest collection of books housed in the Bloczyski Hotel. In 1926, the Athens Women’s Club assumed responsibility for the library, relocating the collection to the Athens Bank.

In 1941, the library moved again, finding a new home in the Community Hall. Decades later, a county-wide building program provided the library with updated facilities. The remodeled space, completed in August 1996, enabled the Athens Branch to quadruple its collection size and expand its children’s programming significantly.

Most recently, in 2024, the library transitioned to a standalone building on Alfred Street, marking a new chapter in its service to the Athens community.
